What is a Vinyl Transfer Decal?

Unlike traditional stickers with a visible background, a vinyl transfer decal is a multi-layered product engineered to transfer only the intricate design elements onto its intended surface.

A vinyl transfer decal is a distinct type of decal that allows individual lettering or shapes to be applied without any surrounding clear material. Pre-masking sheet on all custom transfer stickers and vinyl decals.

Structure of Vinyl Transfer Decals

• The Transfer Tape

The top layer is the transfer tape (or application tape). This is a translucent, low-tack clear or paper masking tape that covers the vinyl decal.

• The Vinyl Decal

The middle layer is the vinyl decal itself. Unlike a traditional “die-cut” sticker that comes with a solid background, a transfer sticker is precision cut. Only the design, the letters or the graphic is cut out of the colored vinyl sheet.

• The Backing Paper

The bottom layer is the backing paper, usually a heavy, wax-coated or silicone-coated sheet. Its job is simple but vital: it protects the adhesive side of your vinyl until you are ready to use it.

What is a UV DTF Sticker?

Unlike traditional vinyl stickers, UV DTF stickers are printed using UV curable inks onto an A film (a release liner) and then laminated with a B film (an adhesive transfer layer). This creates a “transfer” that can be applied to almost any hard, smooth surface by simply peeling and sticking.

How to apply a transfer decal?

• Step 1: Clean the surface

This is the most important step. If there is dust, oil, or residue on the surface, the sticker will not adhere properly. Use rubbing alcohol to remove any oils, dust, or residue. Dry it completely.

• Step 2: Prep the sticker

Before peeling anything, place the sticker face-up on a hard surface. Use a squeegee or a hard-edged credit card to rub over the transfer tape. This ensures the vinyl sticks to the tape rather than the backing paper.

• Step 3: Peel the backing

Carefully flip the sticker over. Slowly peel the transfer tape away from the backing paper. The vinyl design must come up with the tape. If it doesn’t, lay it back down and rub harder.

• Step 4: Apply the sticker

Carefully align the sticker where you want it. Start from the center and work your way out. Place one side down first, then slowly smooth the rest of the sticker onto the surface using your squeegee or the edge of your card. Use firm pressure.

• Step 5: Final press

Once positioned, rub firmly over the design again to push out air bubbles and ensure the adhesive bonds to the surface.

• Step 6: Remove the transfer tape

Wait at least 5-10 minutes if possible (this allows the adhesive to “set”). Peel the transfer tape away at a sharp 180-degree angle (flat against the surface, not pulling upward). This prevents the vinyl from lifting. Go slowly. If the decal starts to lift with the tape, stop, press it back down with your finger, and try again.
